AVOIDANCE AS A WAY OF LIFE

We used to be so much more
adventurous
when'er the phone would ring.
Remember when there was no
caller I.D.
and you were at the mercy of every
con artist and old girlfriend
you were trying to avoid?
Before voice mail
there was no choice--
you had to answer it
and take your chances.

We don't need that level
of owning up--
coming clean--anymore.
Leave a message
if you've got nothing to say.
Obla di, obla da, life goes on.
I'd rather sit here in silence
the whole day long
than try to explain to you, my dear,
why you've got the wrong number.

  1. Smiled at your title, smiled all the way through. Life is so much more peaceful with call display.

  2. __and the ring tones?

    Two short rings, the Smith's phone, on the hill;
    three short, the Kelly's 'cross the street;
    one short ring, the Walton's next door;
    one long ring, the Ozbat's in the valley.

  3. You are right--I used to have a code...ring once and hang up and I will call you back. I could only give that to one person, though. Anything more complicated than that, I wouldn't have been able to remember--lol. Down on the farm we had a party line...you could listen to your neighbors, but it was almost always about the crops and "ya think it will rain, Jeb?"

    1. Too easy...we sometimes have to struggle with our conscience because of it.

  8. I love the wry tone. Very, very true, but I'm grateful for Caller ID around election time. Anything to get me out of having to sit through robo-calls.

    1. Good point. Caller ID will never be more useful than in 2016.
