Moving down the aisle at the
SuperDuper market, a song from
1968 comes on the overhead speakers:
Hi everybody, I'm Archie Bell of The Drells
from Houston Texas...
just as if none of this crazy shit
had taken place in the interim and we
are back to the purity of The Beat.
We don't only sing, but we dance
just as good as we want
just as if this 3 ring circus
hadn't come to town to stay,
and we realized too late we'd
given the ringmaster too much
discretion and now he's wading
into the crowd with the whip
once reserved only for the lions.
But this message from on high
that's washing me in the blood
is as primal as a heartbeat
and the old gal with her cart
that's doubling as a walker
is moving her hips in a way
that tells me to look away
I'VE GOT ANTS IN MY PANTS
LET'S DANCE!
falls away one day
or we're in for a dystopian future
that'll make 1984 seem like
a mere prologue, my permanent escape
through the time warp in aisle # 5
is already booked,
knowing that all must pass
'cept for the one and only thing
that will save us in the end...
THE BEAT!!!
I sometimes marvel over how much the times have changed!
ReplyDeleteindeed, but when we are wrapped up in the music, we don't really care
DeleteIt's a special person who can party while shopping in the supermarket. Good for you !
ReplyDeletePS
Watch out for those hip shaking grannies.Make sure you wear good running shoes when you're out and about:)
Ha Ha...yeah, some things you'd rather just look away from than have that memory burned into your brain forever--lol
DeleteOne question: Do you still call summer summer and winter winter even though your summer is cold and your winter is hot?
Summer is hot ( a scorcher)
ReplyDeleteAutumn is pleasantly warm
Winter is cold (for us)
But
(warmer than your Spring)
Spring is warm to pleasantly hot
It is winter here at the moment
Topsey Turvey down under
everything is back to front
we are the leaders of time
I am already in your future
You will always live in my yesterday
We share the same sun and moon though
SO
we are not total aliens:)
The last five lines you wrote are so poetic...I want to steal them.
DeleteJust the other day, I was under the boardwalk asking myself why fools fall in love, and this song came popping into my mind. I think it has something to do with the music we grew up with. Or maybe it's just because love is like a pretty woman, walking down the street. Hmmmm.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your musical references, Ron. Only persons of a certain age would get them--lol
DeleteIf only we could make it mellow - again. The muzak must be planned. I heard this yesterday in the megamart. And I shook my bootie too. Glad you didn't see it though. Yes we are already living in a dystopian future. Excellent write here.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Toni. Delightful comment! We carry on in the dystopian present.
ReplyDeleteChanges galore! But the music may make it appear to be at a stand-still. It is good to have memories related to it!
ReplyDeleteHank
Music endures. It's about the only thing.
DeleteMusic, dance..that is my freedom, my hope. Love that song!
ReplyDeleteOur only escape in a mad sad world.
DeleteMany happy returns of the dance in isle #5, Tim ... Love, cat.
ReplyDeleteNot only can I dance, I can pick up my chunky peanut butter at da same time!
