LAST GASP
A doe raises her head attentively
some of us stop what we're doing
she hears the sound
far better than we
For most it just blends in
with the rest of the
noise pollution
but for those who do take note
it mimics a cry in the wind
beneath the brainless bemusement
of the Cornhole Championships
one has been reduced to watching
as one dutifully
shelters in place
Some switch to Fox
or CNN to get the latest
from the All-Pandemic-
All-The-Time channels
We are all in this together...
comes up over and over
on the screen
but it's not the way
they'd have you believe
more like nervous strangers
trapped inside an elevator
and the doe and her ilk
are coming out of hiding
to reclaim the
deserted suburban streets
stolen from them
Hey children
what's that sound...
boot heels hit the ground
as we follow along
in lockstep
(at least as far as
the end of the patio)
And that cry in the wind
some of us
but far too few
heard was nothing
less than the
last
labored
gasp
of
ideals
we once held
sacred and dear
dying
the Greeks called it eleutheria!

I'm torn between loving how well said this is and sadly contemplating whether it will prove to be our last gasp indeed. (Clever title! And the 'nervous strangers / trapped inside an elevator' a very telling image also.)
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with you, Rosemary.
DeleteThank you Rosemary. It really does come down to what we value most, and it's hard for me to fathom how some could rank anything else ahead of liberty.
DeleteThank you Magaly, for being so agreeable :)
DeleteYou have encapsulate the feeling we have across the world in just two lines, Tim - we are
ReplyDelete'more like nervous strangers
trapped inside an elevator'!
That's why catch phrases like "we're in it together" try to dumb it down to a simple thought...a simple meaning...when there is none.
DeleteLove how the doe "mimics a cry in the wind" and like the lines "nervous strangers..." Oh and then there is liberty which I think is intertwined with responsibility. Every choice has a consequence.
ReplyDeleteMarja, you've hit upon the core of my basic existentialist philosophy...with freedom comes responsibility...all actions have consequences, the same as all inaction has consequences.
DeleteFor some time now the Earth has been having a few disasters which seem to be telling us humans that we are nor caring for the world fairly and now this happens. Somebody is getting cross!
ReplyDeleteRight on top of global warming...what's next--The Leaning Tower of Pizza falls down?
Delete"more like nervous strangers
ReplyDeletetrapped inside an elevator"
This image is so very credible.
Be safe
Much💜love
Thanks, Gillena. Love back!
DeleteNervous strangers trapped in an elevator together really struck me! I don't really like the branding commercialization of this time.
ReplyDeleteEverything has been reduced to bite-size sound bites for simple minds to understand :)
DeleteI really want to say that this is all wrong, but... I've never been the best of liars.
ReplyDeleteCan't be wrong if it feels so right :)
DeleteTruthful and sobering. Each time I hear the "we're all in this together" repeated and repeated, I wonder will we ever be together again. It's more like we're all in this together sequestered separately! (I'm not sure I'll ever breathe freely on an elevator again, by the way)!
ReplyDeleteI'm taking the stairs!
DeleteI love the strangers in an elevator reference... exactly right and that elevator has stopped half-way to nowhere!!!
ReplyDeleteAs in the song "Stuck In The Middle With You"
Deletewonderful write! you told it so eloquently and smoothly. thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDelete- Hamokine Poet
I do so appreciate that. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteLiberty is not dead (not yet anyway) but it is wounded. Thank you for writing what many cannot express
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting! I agree with your assessment. We are at a crossroads.
DeleteYes, "strangers in an elevator" is so fitting. Liberty has taken a big hit...Hopefully it will survive Covid19.
ReplyDeleteTim, I have not forgotten you or your beautiful poetry!
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice to hear from you! Hope all is well.
DeleteI definitely resonate with those "nervous strangers trapped inside an elevator." Great comparison.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jenna. Remains to be seen if it's going up or down.
Deletewell done tim. pulling in the pop culture references. i dont bother with news, and pop culture disgusts me. its a brave new world, or needs to be. people i see in the market are either "omg a fellow human being" or "git away, ye flea-bearin varmit"
ReplyDeleteRight? People are pretty good about avoiding me, but then, they always have :)
DeleteNice description of the media today: "All-Pandemic-
ReplyDeleteAll-The-Time channels "
Exactly what they are. Though now I see they're covering the poor black dude who got shot, so maybe they're getting tired with the same old BOO! AIN'T YA SCARED?
DeleteFrom where I sit, it's interesting the way liberty and freedom come up in the middle of a pandemic. I do like your elevator analogy.
ReplyDeleteThere's been a long ongoing philosophical debate about "safety" versus the rights of the people to lead their lives in the way they see fit. Yes, with freedom comes responsibility. So it's a balancing act.
DeleteI think we are in this all together... the problem is that it depends to be so many definitions of "we"... since there is almost always a "them" as well.
ReplyDeleteUS and THEM --as in the Pink Floyd song, will never change on this plane of existence.
