OF WALLS AND BALLS

If you're looking for true love
then you must WAVE constantly
it attracts more attention

A wave is just a bird
winging over the walls
we've erected
to keep everyone else out

They're really not real at all
in a certain way
and in another way
they are very real

Violate the laws of physics

and you will see what I mean
like when you rush headlong
into that brick wall

The wall is just an illusion
but it still hurts like hell
now doesn't it?

Ha ha

that's The Joke

Like when you swing at the ball

and miss you feel one way
and when you swing at the ball
and crush it you feel another way
but the ball is just the ball
and isn't responsible
for your feelings
even though you've taken
yours out on it
wham-o
crushed that sucker good

We have lots of exculpatory

evidence that clears the ball
of any wrongdoing

Pedants put out humorless

poems with devastating endings
designed to make you feel
the pain of individuals
or entire cultures wronged

The one thing we will regret
most from the other side
of the divide
is that we took ourselves
way too seriously

Just play the game
and have a ball

  1. A wave is just a bird
    winging over the walls
    we've erected
    to keep everyone else out...

In that case, I'll be a bird, waving.

  3. The ball isnt responsible for your feelings. I read this poem with such enjoyment, Tim. And yes, we need to lighten up and laugh more. Two three year olds observed me passing by as they sat in front of the Co Op today: That lady has crazy hair, but we dont have crazy hair." It cracked me up and made my day.

  4. A very interesting perspective — I really like how you talk about the abstractions and the real pain that they can cause. It's always good to lighten up and not take ourselves that seriously. Well penned! :-)

  6. I have a problem not blaming the ball if it hits me "bang" in the head.

    1. Ha ha...that would be a normal knee-jerk reaction. It's not good to have your butt within striking distance of anybody's knee-jerk reaction!

  7. You're right. Humans are known to err so it makes no sense to take oneself too seriously.. being self-critical can be harmful at times. So yes, I am gonna have a ball!❤️

    1. That is a great analogy between those two walls, one of them unnamed but we all know what it is.

Exactly Tim! Enjoy life as it comes as a wall keeps things out as well as in.

  10. behind the cell phone
    those electronic walls climb
    flips a bird in text

    I know, I'm crude!
__ My parents didn't bribe a classy university to assure my entry, or to gain the proper certificates... I actually had to work; without pomposity, there is far more quiet value behind that wall or ball.

    1. Crude is my stock in trade! Haven't figured out how to flip a bird in text.I'm sure there's an emoji for it. You did it the old fashioned way...YOU EARNED IT! Happy spring to you my friend.

  11. Thanks for linking up, Tim. I enjoyed:

‘A wave is just a bird
    winging over the walls
    we've erected
    to keep everyone else out’

and I can identify with swinging and missing – I have no hand-eye coordination at all and will never blame the ball!

    1. Close your eyes and swing for the fences. You might get lucky!

  12. We humans, especially we poets, have a tendency to transfer human attributes to animals and inanimate object..the mountain was angry, the pitched ball was depressed, the ship was proud... My smile, after reading this fun poetic feels painted on; it will not fade. This fits perfectly with the Pub talk about humor in poetry this week. Hurrah for you and levity.

  16. Gracias, Senor. Better we take it out on the ball than take it out on y'all!
