DAY AT THE PARK
From your soapbox
you're out to save the world
your words echoing
through the park
vying with bouncy
norteno tunes blasting from
low rider car stereos
your nebulous forever
built upon a city of hope
hope against hope
when you're dangling
at the end of a rope
but what if I told you
that everything thing we do
is motivated by either
love
or
fear
and that we can easily choose
between them
and that you stem from a long line
of fear mongers
over generations
and generations
of fear mongers
spitting incendiary words
into the air
the fire and brimstone
heating everyone under the tent
into a frenzy of believing
and giving
but material gain has naught to do
with the hereafter
it's has to do with the here and now
and that house upon the hill
and your aim is to be
that guy on Sunday morning TV
sayin' keep those cards and letters
comin' in folks
cuz it takes a lot of jack
to buy the stairway to heaven
so the plate is comin' round
folks
the plate is comin' round
(what's in your wallet?)

We used to put pennies in the poor box for the poor.
Like pennies from heaven, only it's pennies FOR heaven--lol
DeleteCash a cheque for Jesus....oh dear !
ReplyDeleteI'm his messenger, so send them to me!

...and too many people too terrified to see what the words are doing.
So true. Thanks, Magaly!
DeleteMaybe there is time for another reformation... a bit like paying to be relieved from sin...
ReplyDeleteI've paid for sin before...and then there was relief...so kinda like the same thing...maybe???

Ah.. yes I'd choose love any day! :)
Something told me you would!
DeleteNicely done. It amazes me how many folk will pay for the keys to the kingdom...well for keys.
ReplyDeleteAnd then find out...those keys don't fit !
DeleteDelightfully cynical, and so spot on.
ReplyDeleteI think you've coined the phrase that fits me to a "T"--"delightfully cynical" lol

There is a way of persuasion in matters that touch on the spirituals where is easier accepted!

Yes...I understand there is a new tactic now when they pass around the collection plate...they say, "what's in your wallet?"
DeleteThese days, I'm that guy clinging to irrational hope at the end of my rope. Loved this poem, Timo.
ReplyDeleteWords of wisdom: Even when at the end of your rope...don't worry...cuz you're still hangin' in there!
DeleteCynical, but you may be onto something.
ReplyDeleteCynical? Moi?
DeleteI'm not sure if a free analysis is a great thing or not. Ha, ha, that's a great story and a good poem
