EVERY STINKIN' WORD
Why do they have to put
every STINKIN' word
in the English language
in the dictionary
when
if you know how to read
you already know what
a cat
a table
a tree
a bird
or a turd is
(1. A piece of excrement.
2. A contemptible person.)
It's just a ploy
to sell you something big and fat
at a hefty price
(like a front row ticket to a Wynona concert)
Like that bag of potato chips
that's only half full--
it's sold by weight, you see
but they could have put them
in a smaller bag
if they weren't trying to rook you
Like the half page of fine print
beneath that satellite TV headline:
TWO THOUSAND
FIVE HUNDRED
AND SIXTY-FOUR CHANNELS
FOR ONLY $19.95
sakes alive
you'll spend the rest of the day
trying to figure out
what you'll really pay
Deception runs rampant
A sad commentary
on our human condition
the profit motive overshadowing
all sense of decency and fair play
as we shrug our shoulders and say
that's just the way people are
So many turds floating around
in the human gene pool--
there oughta be a sign regularly posted that says:
"Pool Closed For Cleaning"

Ain't it the truth, Tim. We are all suckers of one sort or another, aren't we? Though I have to confess, I love my old Oxford (dog-eared and plain worn out). :)
ReplyDeletethe potato chip bag baffles me, you know to call it new and improved all you have to do is change the bag...its sick...and yep on the pool, i feel you man, and dont dive in...it gets pretty shallow...
ReplyDeleteTALON: Yeah, I have one dictionary so big it takes two people to carry it--filled with words like: "you," "me." and "cow."
ReplyDeleteBRIAN: And kids pee in that pool all the time.
lemonade & snicker bars
DeleteThat made me snicker.
Deleteoh! yes its true
ReplyDeleteVANDANA: Thanks for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteI especially enjoyed your definitions of turds!!
ReplyDeleteSHERRY: Thanks... those were right out of the dictionary, actually!
ReplyDeleteLove it!! Sad we "buy" words that we already know the definition for...Thanks for the turd definition. There are so many I could assign that name to. Great piece!
ReplyDeletehe profit motive overshadowing
ReplyDeleteall sense of decency and fair play
You can say that again Tim! Marketing ploy prompted by greed to legally rob others of their hard earned money. Consumerism is a good start but often met with lukewarm feedback from those they are trying to save! Great thoughts!
Hank
I love this! I have a book called "I Always Look up the Word Egregious" and I don't think cat and dog and bird and turd are in there.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about the human gene pool, though.

SUSIE: Yes, so many qualify--it may be easier to choose who's not on that list that who is.
ReplyDeleteKAYKUALA: Such a game, this buyer beware thing...why did we become so apathetic about it and just assume--rightly--that everybody is out to screw you...why have we not insisted on standards--on quality control?
KAY: There should be dictionaries just for words that people are often confused about, eh?
ah you never get ready if you start cleaning - re the potato chips bag - i heard it's because of avoiding damage - the air buffers them..ha...that at least is how they try to explain it
ReplyDeleteCLAUDIA: Do I care what potato chips look like? Come to think of it, I may, if I do more "chip art" on this blog (Newcomers, look for it in the archives.)
ReplyDeleteGood question I never thought of before. But I did wonder about how to look up the spelling of words when you don't know how to spell them. I love the image of a front road seat at a Wynona concert.
ReplyDeleteCOLLEEN: Finally someone noticed the Wynona line--my hat is off to you!
ReplyDeleteWe pay so much but do we really enjoy every bit of that tv channel and bag of chips ~ And I am wary of diving into the pool of kids and what not ~
ReplyDeleteGRACE: Stay out of the pool--
ReplyDeleteit's no place
for someone named Grace
Always read the fine print (the lawyer in me says!)
ReplyDeleteAUDREY: I know, but it's in a foreign language!
ReplyDeleteA beautifully worded sad commentary on the human condition! Closed for cleaning maybe should be a sign we apply to more areas than the printed word.
ReplyDeleteGEMMA: Thanks--when will materialism be dethroned as our god and replaced with something more altruistic?

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have gone swimming, if only someone had posted the sign, sadly that rarely happens. So, we get the chance to let them throw us on the concrete. I liked this a lot, it is filled with wisdom, Timoteo.
ReplyDeletePamela
KATE: Thanks, I will get right on that.
ReplyDeletePAMELA: Thanks so much...EVERYBODY OUTTA DA POOL!
