WE ARE ALL CHILEAN

Once
in a while
some scrappy sonzabitches
beat the odds
when they had no right
to expect it

And the rest of us
watch
fists pumping
cheering
our spirits bolstered
as we gamble
on our own tomorrows

  5. Somewhere deep in the sea, a few scrappy little (Chilean) sea bass manage to elude the fishermen's nets, fins pumping as they escape to live another day. For now...

  11. No swearing off fish for me, Tim, although I'm more into the salmon and dungeness crab from the fishing boats at the harbor in Half Moon Bay.

  16. ...I just heard the poet Elizabeth Alexander who wrote Praise Song for the Day, on NPR yesterday and these words fit your post, too:

'Sing the names of the dead who brought us here,
who laid the train tracks, raised the bridges,
picked the cotton and the lettuce, built
brick by brick the glittering edifices
they would then keep clean and work inside of.'
